Design Dada STEALS!

Design Dada? More like 'Copying Jerks'

Since it is a Korean company there probably isn't much I can do about it since I don't think that US copyright laws apply - but I am going to send them a cease and desist letter. I have to fax it to them because there isn't really much contact info. on their site. Meh.

I was pretty crabby when I found out - but I will just take it as a sign of my success..Right? Sure.

oh my gawd... seriously! i love your site but i was sort of amazed at how brave you were to put your ideas so 'out there'. i hope that you have success in getting them to do something about the situation. do you have a good lawyer by any chance? that sometimes works a little better. i guess it goes to prove what an inspiration you are.

Thanks! Yeah - I knew there would be a risk in showing all of my art. But I also got a lot of great exposure. I got a greeting card licenser and a book deal out of it - so it's a hard decision to make.

I am sending them cease and desist letters, and I am going to ask the company who does my licensing to help me since they have an actual legal dept. We'll see!

I sent the contact listed in the whois info an angry email, which will probably not be super useful, but hey, angry emails!!!

Hey, have you tried sending it in to this blog: http://youthoughtwewouldntnotice.com ? They're pretty good with advice and it'll get the theft a higher profile within the design community too.
I love your designs, and always get compliments when I wear the t-shirts.
Good luck! x

jeee
well I guess if you want to look at bright side it means your designs are highly marketable right?

it's fucked up.

that sucks! i too put my work out there and this is one of my biggest fears. the exposure is worth the risk sometimes though. i hope it all works out!

I can't believe they're so stupid. How can they copy your art work right off the bat? I would expect them to at least modify them so that it becomes less apparent...not that they're right though, because I believe its morally wrong to steal like that. So I support you =].

I haven't gone through anything as serious as you have but I totally understand how frustrated it could make you feel if someone steals your ideas and makes them their own's.

That really sucks - a blatant rip off of your work. I really hope they do cease and desist - good luck.

This sucks! They´ve stolen your drawings! I don´t think there´s much you can do though, but at least let them know you know.
And yes, it proves that you are an inspiration indeed but surely you don´t need this kind of stuff to remind you of that!
Grr...! o(>< )o

There *might* be something you can do if the US has a copyright treaty with Korea. You can actually obtain the details of international copyright relations through the Copyright office. Start half-way down on page 20 of this book for more info:

http://books.google.com/books?id=2eIv86spUR0C&printsec=frontcover#PPA20,M1

It's an invaluable resource for getting in the know about this kind of legal stuff.

Good luck!

we should all email them what unoriginal tossers they are. EVERYONE!!!!!

Thank you everyone for all the well wishes and support! I am trying my best to spread the word and talking to legal type people.

Thanks again! :)

Your designs are brilliant. I really hope you get justice from the thieving bas****s!

It's unbelieveable how dead-on carbon copied those are. Inspiration is one thing, but that's just plain silly. I work with overseas manufacturers and it's unfortunate...but so so so very common of an issue. I hope you can shake those people up a bit and teach them a lesson!

Hi its me again but just to let you know, when I googled "design dada", guess what the first result was?

It was this entry about design dada stealing!

I just took a course that talks about the impact of "word of mouth" through the internet so I think this entry is getting some notice here. =]

Hey Mad J - I just edited out your duplicate comments. Thanks for the sweet support!

And thanks again everyone! They have until July 1st to get back to me before I can take more legal action. But my licensing company is going to help a little.

I notice the website has been removed. It is just a holding company there now, so maybe you did have an effect. It doesnt change the fact that they were running it as a commercial operation with prices next to it.
I think this is gonna happen a lot to you. BTW - we are putting you forward for the Best New Greetings card Designer award in the UK - so fingers crossed!

Outrageous! Hope you are able to take action against them. Good luck!

They took the product off of their site! They never contacted me - but at least they are not making it available through their site. YAY.
